Nickel Smelter Intercooler Refurbishment

A valued client had a Nickel Smelter that had two intercoolers that were badly corroded with little to no coating integrity remaining.

IND worked in collaboration with Reliablee and Rezitech Services to reline both intercoolers during a tight shutdown period.

Working around the clock, our team abrasive blasted both intercoolers to remove all existing coatings, filled all severe corrosion pitting and metal loss areas and applied two coats of a high-temperature corrosion and chemical-resistant coating.

The project was a great success and both intercoolers are now protected for many years of continued service.

Corrosion Assessment

The intercoolers had widespread coating failure and significant corrosion on the main shell and internal componentry, including the rails that support the cooling system.

Surface Preparation & Pit Filling

The intercoolers were thoroughly abrasive blasted. Pit filling and metal rebuilding were then conducted using a heat-tolerant epoxy on a considerable portion of the intercooler shells due to widespread pitting and metal substrate loss.

Lining Application

Once the substrate was adequately prepared and all significant metal loss rebuilt, all welds and hard to reach areas where stripe coated and then two coats of Belzona 1523 were spray applied to 500μm minimum dry film thickness (DFT) using our heated line mobile spray rig.

The end result was a high-quality refurbished unit that will have years of service life remaining under the strong protection of Belzona’s protective coatings systems.
